happy new year

I’m exhausted. I know, I’ve been on holiday for the last couple of weeks (but that was visiting family, so it’s not really "restful"), and I mostly just took the last two months "off" to move to Dublin. But a new baby, moving continents, catalogue production, many shows, starting a PhD, quitting my three jobs (after working them all year), two new print series (having never been a printmaker) – this has been a big one, and I’ve got another one coming. I was hoping to spend at least a little bit of time during this li’l trip to NYC re-connecting with some old contacts, maybe making some new ones, but it never happens that way when you go "home". I always just spend time with my wonderful family and friends (no complaining here). I’ll have to make a secret trip to NYC one day if I ever want to actually show or make work here… I’d love to actually do that in the city of my birth at some point :)

We had a nice time in Florida (Sarasota with my aunt/uncle, sister/bro-in-law) – some pix with my family are up on flickr, and more are forthcoming. We’ll be spending New Year’s with Sid’s Godmother and her boyfriend, as well as Sean Slemon and Amy Kaufman in Brooklyn – a quiet evening with friends.

I did have one day to zoot about; didn’t get to see much art, but learned that – if you can believe it – Paddy Johnson of AFC is even cooler in person than her web site lets on. PJ: I’m down for some of the potential colab stuff we talked about, and hope you had a good time with your bro…  I also had a nice chat with Kate at David Krut’s NYC gallery – am hoping we work together some time, cuz she’s a super cool but down to earth art persona… Thanks for boosting my AND Paddy’s egos while we were in your gallery, Kate.

The next few weeks, I’m hoping to dive right in and work my ass off on research for the dissertation, maybe look for some potential conferences or festivals to be on for ’07 and ’08. So, you may not be hearing from me too much… If you are reading this in Joburg, please oh please join me for my opening at Art on Paper Gallery @ 44 Stanley on 27 January, 3PM. I’ve put a lot of work into this series, which has been highlighted on various sites and in several magazines despite its not really being seen, so please come out and see; it’s my first solo catalogue, and I am oh so happy with it.

Alright, enough self promo.

I’m not really a top ten list kind of guy, but please enjoy Edward Winkleman’s Top Ten List of Top Ten Lists as much as I did. Cheers!

Compressionist Dublin

e-Bayed myself another of my favorite scanners for performing images last week, built another battery pack, and hit Autumn in Donnybrook. Only caught the end of the season, but am so glad I did! It’s not only the leaf colors and interesting shades of damp that astonish me – the sky here, and how it’s captured by the beam of the scanner, creates a completely different ambience to that of Johannesburg. More soon, I hope….

Compressionism at the Editions | Artists Books Fair

allysum, Compressionist aquatintSome of my handmade Compressionist prints – iterative etchings, engravings, aquatints, etc, which use plates that were inspired by details from my infamous  scanner performances – will be at the Editions | Artists’ Books Fair in NYC, next week. A small box set from this series will be featured @ the  David Krut table, alongside William Kentridge, Penny Siopis, and Colbert Mashile – good company! Please check it out if you can, November 2nd – 5th, The Tunnel, New York, 261 Eleventh Avenue.

"Anyone interested in contemporary printmaking should not miss this event."

retro-Compressionist update

compressionismThere’s some newly updated Compressionist documentation on Compressionism.net. Latest additions to the video reflect, both, some of the performative aspects of the series, and the current hand-made editions; the latter are being created with the help of printmaker Jillian Ross at  David Krut Workshop in Johannesburg.  For those who have not been to the site in a while, the text has also been updated site-wide, and I am continually uploading new images.

Latest Sound Byte:

Compressionism is a "digital performance and analog archive.” I traverse bodies, spaces and objects with my scanner face, while its head is in motion. After being Compressed into digital images the size of a small sheet of paper, the files are then stretched, cropped and colored by hand, then printed as editioned, archival works. The latest pieces in the series further transform details of these prints into hand-made art objects: etchings, engravings, aquatints, lithographs, spit bites and more.

Compressionism is an exploration of media and perception, a transfiguration in time and seeing.

Thanks also to Niall and Lungi @ Krut for their tireless efforts on this project.

Please watch callandresponse.co.za for updates on my January  ’07 exhibition @ Art on Paper, Joburg.

@ krut

via david krut publishing (posted by Jillian Ross):

So…..

Nathaniel Stern walked into DKW in March, about five months ago, and things haven’t quite been the same for us. Bursting with energy and excited at the new-found potential of the printmaking medium, he set to work on a grande project. Working towards an exhibition at Art on Paper for January of next year and on a print portfolio to be released prior to the exhibition, we have set to creating about 14 new works that vary in technique and size. We are consistently working on several images at once, with myself and two assistants – Niall and Lungi, plus Nathaniel, all working on different elements of each image at any one time.

The whole project started with a computer scanner. Nathaniel has been working on a new digital movement….

Read on (plus more pix!)…. Newly updated Compressionism video will also be online soon….
