Frans Masereel Centre residency

Am on residence at the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium at the moment, working on a new series that is being printed by printmaker and artist Zhane Warren, and published by Art on Paper Gallery (Johannesburg). It’s an extension of my Compressionist works, and my last solo show at AOP, Call and Response.

Compressionism is a “digital performance and analog archive.â€ I traverse bodies, spaces and objects with my scanner face, while its head is in motion. After being Compressed into digital images the size of a small sheet of paper, the files are then stretched, cropped and colored by hand, then printed as editioned, archival works. Later pieces in the series further transform details of these prints into hand-made art objects: etchings, engravings, aquatints, planographs, carborundum, monotype and more.

Compressionism is an exploration of media and perception, a transfiguration in time and seeing.

I’ve done some new performative scans since my show with Haydn Shaughnessy (these will be printed on metallic paper through photographic processes), and am amidst working in stone litho, silk screen, wood cut and dry point. We’re playing up the bands of light and color that Brenton Maart remarked on in Art South Africa, a relic of the digital scanning performances, by creating manufactured spaces on our stones and screens. Will post links to images of the finished works in a little over a week!

greg shakar at greylock arts

The extremely underrated Greg Shakar will have a (I think his first) solo exhibition opening at the new Greylock Arts gallery in Massachusetts – an endeavor by the wonderful and wondrous Marianne Petit and her partner Matthew Belanger. The former was my supervisor when I was at ITP; she is a total star many times over, and you should watch any and every thing she ever does.

Greg is a very smart, technically clued-up and thoughtful artist. I’m sure it’s gonna be a great show. The re-blog:

Gregory Shakar: MoodVectors

Greylock Arts is pleased to announce its first exhibit with Gregory Shakarâ€™s MoodVectors.

Gregory Shakar creates interactive audio sculptures and immersive environments. As an artist and musician he is devoted to the creation of emotive and expressive electronic art. Viewers participating in his interactive installations encounter melodic bolts of lightning, giant sonorous metronomes, and enormous undulating pixels. His performance work includes audience participatory symphonies performed on hundreds of mobile phones and music for quasi-harmonic audio-visual environments.

Shakarâ€™s work has been exhibited internationally including at Ars Electronica (Linz, Austria), Digital Arts Festival (Tokyo, Japan), Nagoya City Museum of Art (Nagoya, Japan), Sonar Festival (Barcelona, Spain), the London Institute for Contemporary Art (London, UK), the Smithsonian Museum of American History (Washington, D.C), Lincoln Centerâ€™s Avery Fisher Hall (New York) and The Kitchen (New York).

Go/diva of the Icommons

Go/diva of the Icommons is an extension of Patrick Lichty’s (re)constructing Cicciolina project in which he, recontextualized as real-life avatar Cicciolina, questions the translations of mythology, culture, normative sociology, gender and IP issues. Here, Lichty stood in the iCommons art gallery for 30 minutes, then rode through the iCommons performance area before exiting. While the double play of Cicciolina asks questions of identity and image in cultural terms, Cicciolina as Go/diva is far more symbolic, asking what cultures we are creating in online communities. Attached is a properly sized texture for a primitive. Thanks for the opportunity, and it’s been an honor.

the art happened there

Opening went really well last night in Dubrovnik (still open for 2 days if you missed it)! There are a constant stream of pictures on flickr from the iCommons Air stream, as well as write-ups (more coming) on the iCommons site (we love you Paddy). Great turn out and response, and several net stars made the artists giddy (Jimmy Wales, for example, writing “edit this art” in chalk on Joy’s mural).

While this was going on, Sitearm Madonna and Cory (Linden) were finishing up the SL build for that iteration of the exhibition (mostly live now), and M.River, the other half of our AiR team MTAA, is in NYC re-mixing the photo stream, live (check out his copyright story on that here).

The Art Happens Here is a contemporary art exhibition and presentation at the iCommons Summit 2007, resulting from an ongoing artist in residence programme. Six international artists and a critic were invited to produce physical and virtual work that engages with fair use, copyright, re-mixing, piracy and/or collaboration on some level – whether directly or indirectly.

Works on show will include, but not be limited to, art books, murals, net.art, sculpture, public performance, video and installation — all conceptually linked by their engagement with the Commons, by the artists’ time spent in Dubrovnik.

Participants include: Joy Garnett (USA), Ana Husman (Croatia), Kathryn Smith (South Africa), Nathaniel Stern (USA / South Africa), MTAA (USA), Jaka Zeleznikar (Slovenia) and blog-critic Paddy Johnson (of artfagcity, USA). There will also be a special appearance in the SL exhibition by Patrick Lichty, aka Man Michinaga (USA).

Artist Discussion Panel on Creative Commons and its potential uses and effects in professional arts practice will be a part of the iCommons main programme in Dubrovnik, 15h00 Croatian time.

For those if you still unfamiliar with Paddy Johnson and her fabulous blog, artfagcity – “As relevant as Eric Fischl. New York art news, reviews and gossip” – WAKE UP. She’s clever, plugged in, and a great, honest critic with a sometimes snarky and sometimes generous attitude: as a writer should be.

And today, as part of her “Art Intercom” series for iCommons, a 2-part interview I did with Paddy features through her blog to (well, it’s all a little confusing, this whole my re-blogging a cross-blog/re-blog thing, so here’s what she says…):

I was travelling for most of yesterday so I didnâ€™t have a chance to mention that my two part interview with new media artist Nathaniel Stern went up on the icommons blog yesterday. You can read the full discussion here and here, but Iâ€™ve included teasers from both interviews below since each part deals with different subject matter. In the first post Stern and I talk about his art work, and in the second, we touch upon how the concerns of the Creative Commons effect artists. Stern speaks with great eloquence on the subject, so our conversation is not to be missed!
