matrices suck

The new Matrix movie has to be one of the worst films I’ve seen in years – and
I see a lot of movies.

A cluster of Mac G5s at Virginia Tech highlighted as likely to be the 3rd fastest super-computer in the world (and the cheapest on the market!) – thanks to Angus Davidson for the link.
Another
American patent bite in the ass
– thanks again, Angus.
Per my question a few days ago, the new Jitter Beta for Windows (Cycling ’74) does indeed require an external VDIG when working with live video, just like the TTC-Pro Xtra for Director (Danny Rozin). WinVDIG is a free one that works alright, I hear.
My site is now the feeling-lucky first-listing on google
when searching for either "nathaniel
stern"
or "nat
stern."
Do I get free cookies?
Word on the street is that Pretoria’s Oppikoppi
Festival,
just outside of Johannesburg, will have a digital art sub-fest,
of mostly video and sound, curated by Marcel Rossouw and Marcus Neustetter.
Dean
Campaign Strengthens Amid Firestorm

Clark Says Bremer Should Be Replaced – the newest presidential candidate in the batch calls for a non-American to head the reconstruction effort in Iraq. Props to him…

Taking Bush head-on, Dean is riding high
Out of the White House, but Still in the Loop (review of weird book by Barbara Bush; this is what people are reading? pass me my harry potter please…)

shaolin-er

As a former (and therefore always – it’s where I was born) Staten Islander, this story really scares and moves me. I can’t believe it’s evaded me for 10 days, and my heart goes out to all of the families the tragedy touched.
DOT Announced Ferry Safety Improvements, linked from the SI Ferry site, which states, "The New York City Department of Transportation extends its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims involved in the tragic Staten Island Ferry accident on October 15, 2003"
And here come the lawsuits…

transfixed

From The Note: "A new ABC News/ Washington Post poll found that if the 2004 presidential election were held today, 46% of Americans say they would vote for President Bush, while 47% would favor an unnamed Democratic candidate – a statistical dead heat and the president’s weakest showing in a generic horse race poll."
And, "Tim Kraft, a man considered by some to be the father of the Iowa caucuses is now lending his organizational expertise and his rolodex of Carter supporters to the Dean campaign."
And here are some notes on what I’ve been saying all along about General Clark’s lack of specifics. Ah, the validation.
On a non-political and art note, South Africa’s only national daily newspaper (new!), THISDAY, had a write-up yesterday about the Wits School of Arts launch last Friday. My favorite part:
"nathaniel stern’s interactive digital art installation, stuttering, transfixed, with its ability to communicate in a human way."

up rhiz ing

From THE THING (sad day for digital art, or happy day for non-paying art-lovers online?):

Sources indicate that the ‘zome (rhizome.org)
officially dissolved its Board of Directors on Tuesday, the 16th of September.
An entity with many of its functions will be reconstituted at the New Museum, where
Mark Tribe & some other principals will join the NuMu’s board &/or become
trustees.

Rachel Greene is slated to direct this new organization.

It’s not been spelled out but is surmised that this entity will assume full responsibility for the maintenance of
Rhizome’s Art Base archive.

various

Politics:
Is this a Dean break, nathaniel? Edwards makes some good points:
Edwards describes Bush as out of touch 08/10/03
Edwards campaigns at site of school for freed slaves
On that note, think about these:
He May Not Be Tops With Party Brass, but Dean’s the One to Watch
The Anti-Bush
While on this kick, I have to give props to Dick Gephardt. In my (not so humble) opinion, he’s in the lead to benefit from Dean (if HD doesn’t take it), is a very strong candidate, and would make a fantastic leader of the free world. I’ve said it before, "how ’bout a Gephardt/Dean bill?" Right now, Kerry/Dean stand a better chance of winning, but the former is a better option…
