another sad day for johannesburg…
RIP Andrew Meintjies

Andrew_Meintjes

Last night, Andrew Meintjes was added to the list of great South African artists – who not only produce work, but support the arts, and are giving within the community at large – that have been killed for next to nothing. Like Gito Baloi, who was only a few months ago slain for the pocket cash in his wallet after playing a gig, Andrew was shot (several times) in his own studio.

His killers only left with a cell phone.

Friends, family, artists, and art appreciators will mourn the loss of a giving, caring, committed, excited and excitable man for months, years, to come. It’s with a great sadness that I’m beginning to recognize how often this happens in South Africa, that I see now how the atrocities I claim newspapers over-inflate, are perhaps more real than we’d all like to admit.

Andrew gave me many gifts in the time I got to know him. I’ve no doubt that a lot of people can say the same.

jitter, round three

Here’s a pic of a patch that two participants hacked together in day 3 of our workshop, which used a wacom tablet – both pressure, and the x/y grid when drawing – as a sensor for making music and images over live video. Other work included a VJ tool that used high amplitude beats to mix cellular patterns with live video, a proposed installation that took image snapshots whenever someone snapped their fingers and mixed these with an ongoing archive, an infra-red point tracking device that could follow participants around a room, and a tool that combined live body tracking, motion tracking and amplitude detection to cool effect for use in live performance.

neverland

Joˆ£o Orrechia, an old buddy of mine who currently lives in Berlin, will be moving to Joburg in November of this year! You must take a listen to some of his beautiful music. You can hear his solo stuff here and some collaborative work here.

art South Africa

Here’s a pic of James Webb and Matthew Kalil’Äôs “There are far too few Friday nights left in the world” – I grabbed the still from this month’Äôs ARTTHROB, which is edited by the capable former. Of course, it’Äôs the sound issue, given his propensity (lucidity?) towards and with sound installations.

Quicklink:
theory action figures – thanks to Ronan Coyle (no, really! Michel Foucault waves his baton in poststructuralist style at all challenges!).

hee

On a quick search to see who shared a birthday with me, the first name to come up was Kenny G – am I the only one who sees this as a bad omen?

Last night, Kupfer (whose blog seems to be updated nearly as often as I have a birthday) did some magic tricks for me at the PG club – I, of course, was utterly thrilled. I’m like a little kid in how much I love that stuff, but without any desire to learn how it’s done. He even gave me a small trick of my own as a gift.

Nicky got me a great book on contemporary narrative theory (YAY!), and a fleece robe (I’m always cold). My mom-in-law got me a computer thriller called Firewall, as I’m on a big thriller kick lately. Fitting.
I’m hoping that the generous gifts my family usually shower on me may provide something viable towards buying a new iBook!

I do not feel any older, but am happy to celebrate life. I’ve been feeling a little exhausted lately, and am hoping that my upcoming trip will prove inspirational, beyond that end. When I’m tired, I get down – it’s just not part of my being to stop moving, I think.

Anybody wanna hang out in NYC, Ithaca, Cuba or Dublin in the next while?

tipping the gaff + others

Oops. I forgot to blog that I gave a brief public talk at Wits yesterday. I gave some context of my work, but mostly, it was a test of my new installation, followed by some great crit and stunning feedback from those who attended. (Shout-outs and appreciation to them; I already have some ideas of what might change before it goes up.) Finally, I spent about 45 minutes showing how body-tracking and amplitude-tracking, in Jitter, work. I think they were pretty surprised at just how easy it is :)

State Pulls Plug On Electronic Voting – ’bout time. Too many bugs (for now).

But at least there’s already a crazney.net – iTunes stuff new feature crack for the latest version of iTunes. Word.

The JAG (Johannesburg Art Gallery) opening this past wednesday was not the best one in the world, but the show itself is stunning. If you have not seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out. Is it just me, or is Willem Boshoff a genius? (I think the latter.)

GordArt opening and poetry in Melville at 6PM today!

My show with Marcus is moving along, and it looks like we got the talented Colin Richards to write us some text. Hope to see you at the ArtSpace in Fairland, on May 16.
