I think that today is "really cool people I never met but have something
in common with" day – tho some of the people I am about to mention I have
met, but I doubt they remember me. Of course, I’ll stick to just mentioning a
few people in the above category, cuz otherwise I’ll have nothing to blog next
year, right?
First, is Josh Nimoy – seems
like a really cool artist / programmer. He has a bunch of free and useful tools
on his site, as well as some open source apps and info on his impressive work.
Never met him, but I am an alum of the graduate program he is currently in (and
I graduated when I was the same age he is now – tho I was not nearly as cool as
him at the time).
Next, Colin
Richards, who I did meet once. Really interesting and talented artist – we
both teach at the Wits School of Arts.
Willem Boshoff,
who is so nice, that he might even remember my name from the time we met. He is
probably my favorite South African artist right now. We both showed installations
at the Gencor Gallery in Joburg in ’01 – only one week apart.
David
Rokeby is amazingly cool for reasons completely apparent at first glance.
I’d like to say that this is what we have in common, but I am not that
cool. We are both from North America, and we both work with interactive video.
One day, I may even be able to afford his softVNS objects for Max…
Here’s a new one: Kristin Thomas (of spam
poetry) – is just plain funny. We both use the blogger.com
service.
Last, and certainly not least, is Robyn
Orlin – we both had work at the FNB Dance Umbrella in Johannesburg last year.
But, like everyone above, she is much cooler than I am.
Big primary day today in the US; don’t forget to vote if you are in one of the
participating states! I know what they say about Kerry, but I am still rooting
for Mr. Howard Dean
– check out his li’l speech about black history month on the 1st of Feb.
More soon…
