The Latest Theory Is That Theory Doesn’t Matter.
Could this
possibly be for real? (need free subscription) I know we are in dire straights
and all, and we are yet again (thanks Mr. Bush) looking for simplified "answers"
instead of posing good questions, but how could big names like Henry Louis Gates
Jr., Homi Bhabha, Stanley Fish and Fredric Jameson deny any possible value to
the critique of modern society through a re-reading of current events and history?
How can a world that only believes in direct relationships wade through
the sea of metaphorized and reified "evil" with only Noam Chomsky at
the helm? "Theory never directly liberated anyone," to paraphrase the
article, but what and who does? Where does resistance come from? What kinds
of resistance are there, and how do we define them? In what space are we able
to reclaim identity? Language, language, language & language. Conversely,
how do empires, such as the US, justify their wars? You got it. (Ridiculous binary
systems, constructed through the misuse of) Language. Sigh.
So on the sad day that President Bush teaches our children that shooting first
and talking later is a means to "solve" any given "problem,"
our best thinkers stop talking altogether? This course leaves no room for discourse.
