Today was one of those "run-around town" type days. Now that I have
South African permanent residence, I was able to get my contract verified and
a Wits ID, with a parking
permit. Exciting. I also looked around town a bit for a mode of transport,
and got some "business" (more like "art") cards made up, with
my contact info on them. Thrilling. Delivered a small gift for a friend
that I picked up in the states a few months ago, but just hadn’t had a chance
to drop off until now. Amazing. The biggest news of the day is that I ran
into Steven
Dubin. (This is actually kind of nice.) He’s the author of Arresting
Images: Impolitic Art and Uncivil Actions, among other interesting reads,
and a genuinely nice guy. I met him after my first week or so, on my first trip
to SA, and it was nice to have a progressive American around to bounce my initial
reactions off of (if only for a few days, since he left that week). It seems he
is here again, on a Fullbright
Scholarship for the year, so I’m hoping we get to spend some time together,
chatting and seeing art :) Before we parted, I gave him one of my "Dissent
is Patriotic" pins to wear, in opposition of the war, and he seemed more
than pleased.
This is Africa.
