taxes for ex-pats 101

Hello everyone out there in webland, and welcome to yet another exciting edition
of the nathanielstern.com blog. Today’s
topic, thanks in no small part to the help of the charming Jerry Botha over at
Deloitte, will be: taxes.

So it seems that due to my South African residence, and the fact that I have spent
less than (I think it was) 180 days in the US, I will likely get back all
of my deducted taxes from the US – this is for the work I did in both New York
and Minneapolis, on both the state and federal level.

If you are in a similar position to my own elsewhere in the world, don’t get too
excited just yet – I will then have to pay South African taxes (much higher rates)
for my income worldwide. Luckily, I’ll be able to use deductions from
my home office, but this is still a chore, and I will probably wind up owing a
bit (give or take a lot). Like many things, time will tell.

Off to do some freelance stuff (flash, javascript, etc) for some web-people now;
if you want to relieve me of said duties, by more art :)
