I saw most of the old&#8217;s cool from <a href=\"http:\/\/itp.nyu.edu\">ITP<\/a>, between my visit there (Bronwyn was impressed with their work), and a &#8220;holding court&#8221; event on the LES (Lower East Side); did a run in the Empire State Building, macc&#8217;ed with some Shaoliners, and even did a final round with the SA art sceners displaced to NYC (Bron, Si, Amy, Sean, myself).<\/p>\n<p>For Bronwyn&#8217;s b-day, we hit up <a href=\"http:\/\/newyork.citysearch.com\/profile\/11416840\/\">Whiskey Ward<\/a> for some nice drinks, then <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ghenet.com\/\">Ghenet<\/a> for yummy Ethiopian. A realization struck me in all of this: Johannesburg is now my home.  Yes, NYC will always be some kind of welcoming space, &#8220;a home, if not my home&#8221; &#8211; but my visits here seem more and more to be only that: visits.  I never stay long enough to feel at ease, safe, right.  I love Jozi and SA, and many of the things they have to offer (and I&#8217;ve no choice but to take the bad with the good), but I sigh deeply as I start to mourn the loss of my birthplace &#8211; and this goes double because it&#8217;s none other than the NYC! Perhaps it&#8217;ll be mine one day again&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><b>P.S.<\/b> &#8211; oh, and i changed the color palette of the whole site. if it looks weird (and not just weird because it is no longer yellow, but there are odd errors in layout or color scheme), you can force an empty cache in your browser preferences, then restart your browser, and it should look fine again (tho white). hope you like it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m off to Budapest this afternoon (for a week before I&#8217;m back in Jozi), and my last night in NYC was a hoot.
