We all know that Telkom has ridiculously high telecoms charges –
\nthat’s no secret.<\/p>\n
But whenever a comparison is made to other countries, Telkom has a
\ntantrum like a spoilt child stating that it’s unfair to compare South
\nAfrica to other countries.<\/p>\n
I decided to do a little comparison to show how expensive it really
\nis… so here are the results of the investigation.<\/p>\n
I compared the time and costs involved in downloading 100GB of data
\nover Telkom’s fastest ADSL offering (1Mbps) with the time and costs
\ninvolved in flying to Hong Kong, visiting an Internet caf\u00c3\u00a9,
\ndownloading 100GB of data at their fastest speed (1Gbps), and flying
\nback.<\/p>\n
Yep… that’s quite a challenge! And here are the details:<\/p>\n

Line speed = 1Mbps<\/p>\n
Download Size = 100GB<\/p>\n
Estimated Download Time 9.5 days<\/p>\n
ISP (34 x 3GB accounts @ R269) = R 9,146.00<\/p>\n
Line Rental (ADSL) = R 680.00<\/p>\n
Line Rental (Residential Voice) = R 92.28<\/p>\n
TOTAL = R 9,918.28<\/p>\n
Hong Kong<\/p>\n
Line speed = 1Gbps<\/p>\n
Download Size = 100GB<\/p>\n
Estimated Download Time 13 minutes<\/p>\n
Flight (SAA) = R 7,942.00<\/p>\n
Internet Caf\u00c3\u00a9 (average cost @ HKD20) = R 17.43<\/p>\n
TOTAL = R 7,959.43<\/p>\n
Difference: Hong Kong is cheaper by R 1,958.85<\/p>\n
So to sum up… it’s cheaper and quicker to fly to Hong Kong if you
\nwant to download 100GB of data!<\/p>\n
I haven’t got the time to work out where the two converge, but it just
