He created a single unit made of polyvinyl plastic of some kind. And then repeated the unit a hundred times or so. His exhibition is completely white in a white gallery, and he also has “drawings”- framed works which are really sculptures made up of paper card cut to size and layered beautifully, to form different patterns and abstract forms.
\nHe comes into the gallery each day and changes the exhibition, or the pattern that the helix forms that he has created. You can check his work out at www.virgilgallery.com and follow links to John Powers.
\nThe shape he uses is somewhat reminiscent of a sculpture that Robert Smithson did early on in his short lived career( he died in a plane crash while working on a project when he was 36) The Smithson retrospective is currently on at the Whitney Museum and its very good.
\nWe all know him for his work ” Spiral Jetty”- one of the first serious land art works. It was good to see what other work he did. He produced many sculptures using steel glass and mirror, which would reflect off whatever was in the environment around you. www.whitney.org
\nIn future Ill try to go with my camera to these shows. many of them don’t let you take pics, but if your good you can sneak one in. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
His exhibition and some more<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"jetpack_post_was_ever_published":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_access":"","_jetpack_dont_email_post_to_subs":false,"_jetpack_newsletter_tier_id":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[6,3,17,1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-797","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-art","category-art-and-tech","category-sean-slemon","category-uncategorical"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_shortlink":"https:\/\/wp.me\/p9blZT-cR","jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":1351,"url":"https:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2006\/10\/08\/collecting-digits-the-upgradejhb-digital-soiree-panel-discussion\/","url_meta":{"origin":797,"position":0},"title":"Collecting Digits – The Upgrade!JHB + Digital Soiree Panel Discussion","author":"nathaniel","date":"08 October 2006","format":false,"excerpt":"As usual a thorough post from Christo on our last Upgrade!Joburg, via the atjoburg site: The Collecting Digits Panel at Wits Digital Arts.
