Now that I have<br \/>\nSouth African permanent residence, I was able to get my contract verified and<br \/>\na <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wits.ac.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wits<\/a> ID, with a parking<br \/>\npermit. <i>Exciting. <\/i>I also looked around town a bit for a mode of transport,<br \/>\nand got some &quot;business&quot; (more like &quot;art&quot;) cards made up, with<br \/>\nmy contact info on them. <i>Thrilling. <\/i>Delivered a small gift for a friend<br \/>\nthat I picked up in the states a few months ago, but just hadn&#8217;t had a chance<br \/>\nto drop off until now. <i>Amazing. <\/i>The biggest news of the day is that I ran<br \/>\ninto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purchase.edu\/academics\/faculty\/stevendubin\/default.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Steven<br \/>\nDubin.<\/a> <i>(This is actually kind of nice.)<\/i> He&#8217;s the author of <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0415908930\/qid=1049212647\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_1\/002-3338368-3888800?v=glance&#038;s=books&#038;n=507846\" target=\"_blank\">Arresting<br \/>\nImages: Impolitic Art and Uncivil Actions,<\/a><\/i> among other interesting reads,<br \/>\nand a genuinely nice guy. I met him after my first week or so, on my first trip<br \/>\nto SA, and it was nice to have a progressive American around to bounce my initial<br \/>\nreactions off of (if only for a few days, since he left that week). It seems he<br \/>\nis here again, on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iie.org\/cies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fullbright<br \/>\nScholarship<\/a> for the year, so I&#8217;m hoping we get to spend some time together,<br \/>\nchatting and seeing art :) Before we parted, I gave him one of my &quot;Dissent<br \/>\nis Patriotic&quot; pins to wear, in opposition of the war, and he seemed more<br \/>\nthan pleased.<br \/>\n<i>This is Africa.<\/i> <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was one of those &quot;run-around town&quot; type days.
