{"id":585,"date":"2005-04-11T19:53:14","date_gmt":"2005-04-11T17:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/?p=585"},"modified":"2005-04-11T19:55:45","modified_gmt":"2005-04-11T17:55:45","slug":"physical-computing-workshop-runs-over-april-long-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2005\/04\/11\/physical-computing-workshop-runs-over-april-long-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Physical Computing workshop runs over April long weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/wp-content\/mayav_pcomp.jpg?w=850\" alt='Mayav Patel demonstrates the physical computing milmoe box' \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"meta\">Interactive Media Design MA student, Mayav Patel, demonstrates the physical computing application that he developed in the workshop led by Ralph Borland &#8211; pic and text by Christo Doherty<\/div>\n<p>Designed and led by Ralph Borland (ITP, New York; Michaelis Fine Art, UCT) the workshop was attended by a group of WSOA Digital Arts students and interested Fine Arts students.<\/p>\n<p>Physical computing makes use of sensors, mechanical and electronic devices, and computers to activate objects or environments in the physical world, making interactive artworks, installations and performance devices.<\/p>\n<p>In this 3-day (2 &#8211; 4 April) workshop held in the Interactive Media Design Lab at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wits.ac.za\/artworks\/postgrad\/digimedia.htm\">WSOA Digital Arts<\/a>, the students explored examples of physical computing work by contemporary artists, and learnt some of the possibilities for tracking information from the physical world through various sensors. They also looked at particular software which can be used to manipulate audio and video.
