(need free subscription) I know we are in dire straights<br \/>\nand all, and we are yet again (thanks Mr. Bush) looking for simplified &quot;answers&quot;<br \/>\ninstead of posing good questions, but how could big names like Henry Louis Gates<br \/>\nJr., Homi Bhabha, Stanley Fish and Fredric Jameson deny any possible value to<br \/>\nthe critique of modern society through a re-reading of current events and history?<br \/>\nHow can a world that only believes in <i>direct<\/i> relationships wade through<br \/>\nthe sea of metaphorized and reified &quot;evil&quot; with only Noam Chomsky at<br \/>\nthe helm? &quot;Theory never directly liberated anyone,&quot; to paraphrase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/04\/19\/arts\/19CRIT.html\" target=\"_blank\">the<br \/>\narticle,<\/a> but what and who does? Where does resistance come from? What kinds<br \/>\nof resistance are there, and how do we define them? In what space are we able<br \/>\nto reclaim identity? Language, language, language &amp; language. Conversely,<br \/>\nhow do empires, such as the US, justify their wars? You got it. (Ridiculous binary<br \/>\nsystems, constructed through the misuse of) Language. Sigh.<br \/>\nSo on the sad day that President Bush teaches our children that shooting first<br \/>\nand talking later is a means to &quot;solve&quot; any given &quot;problem,&quot;<br \/>\nour best thinkers stop talking altogether?
