{"id":551,"date":"2005-02-19T16:40:27","date_gmt":"2005-02-19T14:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/?p=551"},"modified":"2005-02-19T16:44:49","modified_gmt":"2005-02-19T14:44:49","slug":"stukkies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2005\/02\/19\/stukkies\/","title":{"rendered":"stukkies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/wp-content\/cobus.jpg?w=850\" alt=\"cobus van bosch's trench\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"meta\">cobus van bosch&#8217;s <i>trench<\/i><\/div>\n<p>A really great start to the new year, Teresa Lizamore&#8217;s <i>artspace<\/i> gallery, out in Cresta (outskirts beyond Jozi) shows three relatively established artists: cobus van bosch, jp meyer and varenka paschke.<\/p>\n<p>Cobus had to be my favorite of the bunch, depicting battle sites of old in varnished cattle bone. Above is a beautiful piece (entitled <i>trench<\/i>), and the works range from small to large, very textured to extremely polished and subtle. They feel like a cross between mosaics and topological maps, but are grounded in a literal flesh.<\/p>\n<p>JP&#8217;s stuff felt very pop-arty and decorative, but the more time you spend with them, the more they change. I felt like they were kind of interactive &#8211; my eyes got dizzy and danced in front of the larger pieces, and so I had to surf around them with my body in order grasp the full experience.<\/p>\n<p>And Varenka was somewhere between the two &#8211; she had an ironic brush stroke or 700 between her images, which often mimicked silk screening or a pixelated image, but almost always in warm hues and with odd portraits&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>cobus van bosch&#8217;s trench A really great start to the new year, Teresa Lizamore&#8217;s artspace gallery, out in Cresta (outskirts beyond Jozi) shows three relatively established artists: cobus van bosch, jp meyer and varenka paschke.
