{"id":229,"date":"2003-11-07T12:29:32","date_gmt":"2003-11-07T18:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/?p=229"},"modified":"2005-02-04T10:35:42","modified_gmt":"2005-02-04T08:35:42","slug":"wheelers-they-are-a-turnin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2003\/11\/07\/wheelers-they-are-a-turnin\/","title":{"rendered":"wheeler&#8217;s they are a turnin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> I recently stumbled onto <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwheeler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren<br \/>\nWheeler&#8217;s web site.<\/a> Although I honestly can&#8217;t remember having long or meaningful<br \/>\nconversations with this woman while we were together at Cornell (this is because<br \/>\nthey never happened by chance, not because either of us was incapable of such<br \/>\nthings &#8211; or so I&#8217;d like to think), I do have a handful of fond memories where<br \/>\nI had the pleasure of seeing her perform some poetry up in i-town. And from the<br \/>\nfew brief conversations we did share, I think she was\/is a bit of alright. Admittedly,<br \/>\nreading her words on screen is not as dialogical or powerful as seeing her live,<br \/>\nbut that is Mos Def not to say that power is lacking. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laurenwheeler.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Check<br \/>\nher out.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another note, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jandr.com\/templates\/information\/live.tem\" target=\"_blank\">Pat Benatar playing live, and for free, in NYC.<\/a> Sorry to miss it.<\/p>\n<p>And, for those of you on my side of the globe, <a href=\"http:\/\/forgottenangle.org\/art\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Anti-Retroviral<br \/>\nTheatre (ART)<\/a> has its first showcase of student work this Sunday, beginning<br \/>\n2PM @ The Dance Factory, Newtown Cultural Precinct (downtown, next to MegaMusic),<br \/>\nJohannesburg. <em>Background:<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/forgottenangle.org\/art\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">ART<\/a><br \/>\nis a course aimed at providing people living with HIV with a range of new skills,<br \/>\nin order to transform their own lives and find innovative ways of creating positive<br \/>\npossibilities for themselves and their communities, to become more actively engaged<br \/>\nin social transformation.<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve done a few poetry workshops with these peops, and I have to say that they<br \/>\nare doing amazing work &#8211; and I&#8217;m talking about the students, here, even more than<br \/>\nthe facilitators. Ages range from 17-45, and the backgrounds of the participators<br \/>\nare even more diverse (most are coming in from the townships, daily; <a href=\"http:\/\/forgottenangle.org\/art\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">ART<\/a><br \/>\nprovides transport money and lunch, and the workshops are all free free free).<br \/>\nBe prepared for some amazing and dynamic people, doing even more amazing and dynamic<br \/>\nthings &#8211; the course has included workshops in arts, holistic and positive living,<br \/>\ndance, trust, music, painting, photography, storytelling, performance poetry,<br \/>\nsound journeys, acting, mime, physical theater, yoga, PNI (psycho-neuro-immunology),<br \/>\nnutrition and home based care.
