{"id":1689,"date":"2008-10-16T15:10:23","date_gmt":"2008-10-16T13:10:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/16\/i-feel-your-hope\/"},"modified":"2008-10-16T15:12:45","modified_gmt":"2008-10-16T13:12:45","slug":"i-feel-your-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nathanielstern.com\/blog\/2008\/10\/16\/i-feel-your-hope\/","title":{"rendered":"I feel your Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/supervalentthought.wordpress.com\/2008\/09\/17\/sarah-palin-female-complainer\/\">Via<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8230; in response to the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/thefix\/2008\/09\/handling_the_economic_crisis_1.html#more\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/a> <\/em>observation that Obama is uncomfortable with performing Clintonesque sentimentality of the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I feel your pain\u00e2\u20ac\u009d variety, I thought, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s right, Obama\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I feel your hope.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 Does the difference matter?<\/p>\n<p>I think so.\u00c2\u00a0 Obama is detaching from the liberal tradition of claiming that our <em>wounds<\/em> are what make us alike and what make us obligated to aid\u00c2\u00a0 each other. Obama\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s saying that it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>hope<\/em> that makes us alike, especially the hope for politics to advance the world toward deserving our optimism for it.<\/p>\n<p>For many of his supporters, Obama produces something like the return of limbs to life that frostbite survivors feel first as pain and then as a thrill that the numbness has finally ended&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>I only wish feelings of unity could dissolve fundamentally antagonistic interests, but I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think so. But making it ok to demand from politics a reason to maintain hope for the coming community made up of people who are already alive is important.
