sean slemon at premises

OK, so I forgot my camera and you will not be getting any images, but I can at least talk about the show.

Sean Slemon really left SA with a bang! He had three successive solo shows (one at Outlet in Pretoria, then two at The | Premises in Joburg), the last of which is on now; he then tied for first prize in the Sasol New Signatures competition before leaving for New York City (to begin as a grad student in Pratt’s awesome MFA sculpture program).

Admittedly, the first Premises show as my favorite of the three, which features his famed “carpet installation,” where he carpeted the gallery with many layers building up to a pinnacle point in the center. It really did transform the gallery, and make an amazing play out of our relation to the space.

I did a lot of somersaults.

Going on the same theme, the current show is more “purchasable” art, where he’s mapped 11 regions of Johannesburg based on space and population. His sculpture is formally beautiful, but the real keepers are the not-so-subtle-but-surprisingly-amusing images of brick walls and barbed wire in all 11 regions. I think they work better as a set than alone, so you should buy all 11 and give them to me. His etchings ain’t so bad neither.

Woot: Sean Slemon is cool.

P.S. I’m back. Will be building up more and more writings about art in Jozi again. Yay.

linkage, etc

Well, Christo Doherty and atjoburg’s Friday Digital Soiree sessions are back at the Convent (Wits), so head on over to the (more and more active) atjoburg site for more info.

New link at right for virus films – the “Official Website of Philipp Virus, Miron Zownir, Aryan Kaganof”. That last dude’s the one who puts the pretty pictures here.

this weekend
Kentridge Guided tour on Saturday at 2:oopm, Johannesburg Art Gallery.
Also Saturday, Lebo Mashile and the Drum Cafe. Sound Byte: One of South Africa’Äôs hottest spoken word poets, Lebo Mashile, performs pieces from her latest book, In a Ribbon of Rhythm, to the beat of the Drum Cafe. Venue: The Atrium, the Women’Äôs Jail; Date: 20 August; Time: 18h30…
I’ve written about Lebo before, she’s awesome.

Flip Hattingh and Diek Grobler opens at gordart Gallery this Sunday at 5pm

Have art events in joburg? You can contact me (details link above) with some short text, and I’ll be happy to post it here. Actually, art events in other parts of South Africa are welcome, too. Just know that if you send to me, I may edit, etc. You could sue, but I have no money, nor does this site make any.

Bleh.

welcome home!

Yep, that’s right; I’m back in Jozi. Am utterly exhausted, have a full inbox and messy desk, and forgot that I was out of commission for 2 months even before I left (from a dreadful illness), so I might not make it to see Brenton Maart’s opening over at Gallery Momo this evening; but you should.

I’m gonna settle back into being a live in Johannesburg today, and try to get started on the lists and lists of “stuff” first thing in the morrow….

Sigh. It’s good to be home.
