Apple does it again

OMG, Apple’s new iTunes let’s you download animations from Pixar, your favorite TV shows from the night before, etc… The new iMac has a remote control to download and play (and a built-in iSight to play with other goodies), and the new iPod lets you transfer any and all of the above to it.

At $1.99 per 1-hour TV show, and being the only place (other than P2P’s) you can get this stuff, it’s actually a great deal — even from SA. I want to see the new season of Lost, dude, but bandwidth on the P2P is too pricey from the third world; $2 is not!

Stories about roosters

Nathaniel and I met at the Creative Commons conference in May and had been planning a cross-blog thing since then, which due to some very bad interference from the world never realized. The worst of which was of course Nathaniel falling ill, and of course everyone here will agree that we’re really glad he’s better now. A lot of what you need to know about Nathaniel you can determine from the fact that he posted his own welcome on silentcoder.co.za, a lot of what you need to know about me, you can determine from the fact that I’m not going to post a welcome. Having given you this short bit. Let’s jump right into something. Tonight I am invited to a cocktail party in Sandton as a speaker for the ACT summit(my slot is Friday morning, drop by if you wanna meet me). I have never been to a cocktail party. The invitation says, "Wear business dress" What exactly IS business dress ? Well I suppose a suit right… erm until a month ago I didn’t even OWN a suit, and the one I have now I only bought because I was best man at a wedding and did not wish to offend anybody. My typical style is a funky slogan t-shirt and black jeans, simple, and in my own way stylish (or at least, unique which is quite probably better) Being (by choice) rather unfamiliar with the upper echelons of the business world, I am thinking of it as a sort of exploration. Like Indiana Jones and the temple of doom except with free drinks. What do the owners of multimilion dollar corporations discuss over social drinking ? I volunteer to venture forth into their domain and find out. Should I not make it back, please tell Silvia I love her, and the little bottle with the coloured sand pictures is hers no matter what my parents say. If I survive, I’ll report back.

(so tired and) I want my MTAA

I’ve been having a bit of trouble sleeping lately, so sorry for the silence. Admittedly, am also psyched to have more than one guest blogger, and was hoping I would not have to post as much (lazy-boy) to keep my public happy (ha).

Spent some time being utterly WOWed at both David Goldblatt shows recently, and will write more about them later – in the meanwhile, go check them out at the Goodman Gallery and the Johannesburg Art Gallery, if you are in the area, and you will not be disappointed.

In other news, 2005’s Ars Electronica winners have been announced, and Rhizome is looking for membership fees again (not required but appreciated). I’m sure I’ll give something, but this makes me want to give $500 or more (Rhizome is handing over various art to first-come, first-serve hefty donors). Hell, I have trouble making a small donation as it is (tho rhizome rocks, so if you have the money you should donate), but this was such a good idea. And forgive my gushing, but methinks the duo that makes up MTAA is producing some of the most provocative new work around.

Great idea to give art, guys!

Ruan Hoffmann and Theresa-Anne Mackintosh

Ruan Hoffmann + Theresa-Anne Mackintosh at the Franchise Gallery, 44 Stanley, Johannesburg
Ruan Hoffmann & Theresa-Anne Mackintosh at the Franchise Gallery, 44 Stanley, Johannesburg

This is a tight show and a real lesson in creating an enveloping space for your work – I’ve never seen Franchise like this before…. The two creators have quirky styles and work hard to “brand” their art in ways absolutely necessary in today’s world.

Ruan Hoffman’s plates and vases are beautifully made, have interesting designs, and would go nicely in my home. Admittedly, I’ve heard he’s a young ‘un – and I’ve never seen his name before this show – so I think he might have priced them a bit high for now. Still, given the area, and the style he makes them in, it just might be working (didn’t ask).

Mackintosh, on the other hand, has work with an aesthetic somewhere between Japanime and Barney, but with her own little design-y twist around questions of beauty and distinction. It’s fun, cute, trendy and easy to live with – more than 2/3rds of her “babies” (pictured) have already sold since the show’s opening on Friday (but she should give me one for free, just because). I remember meeting Theresa-Anne ages ago at GordArt, and her name has been thrown around a lot since then – it’s nice to see how hard she’s been working, the versatility of her media.
