Going in reverse order from right to left, we’ve got Franci Cronje (media artist), Zingi Mkefa (choreographer, and journalist for THISDAY), Kathryn Smith (Standard Bank young artist of the year, who has agreed to help me hang my upcoming solo show at the Johannesburg Art Gallery!), Monna Mokoena (gallerist / owner of gallery momo, who has agreed to handle the sales of that very same show) and Melissa Gober (of the Goodman Gallery).
We were actually all at gallery momo for what promised to be a very interesting talk on The Importance of Writing & Preserving Our Arts Heritage, with panelists including the likes of Kathryn and Zingi (above), as well as Colin Richards and Sipho Mdanda. However, fate had other plans (many of the panelists didn’t show up). Anyhow, an interesting talk progressed on different matters. We discussed the pale male state of arts administration in Jozi, the lack of young emerging artists who work well with new media, and the need for artists to work in other fields in order to make ends meet (as well as the lack of good businesspeople in the fine arts realm).
Anyone care to comment?
