on Art Fag City

For those if you still unfamiliar with Paddy Johnson and her fabulous blog, artfagcity – “As relevant as Eric Fischl. New York art news, reviews and gossip” – WAKE UP. She’s clever, plugged in, and a great, honest critic with a sometimes snarky and sometimes generous attitude: as a writer should be. And today, as [...]

the un-prounounce-able

Dani over at iCommons asked me to donate some art to the upcoming bring n braai, which is geared towards CC work in relation to child education in South Africa. I wanted to give something that was fitting and South African, so I went back into my archives and pulled up the performance poem I [...]

NCAD, Joburg art, media art calls

Sorry for the lack of postings lately, but as promised before the move to Dublin, that’s just how it’s gonna be (until such time as Bronwyn and Rat do the regular blogging they tentatively offered here; like most Joburgers, they’re busy with more than a handful of things, so…). OK, catch-up spanning (and doing little [...]

Sorry for the lack of posts whilst in SA. Just been too hektik on this visit home. It’s been so great, and I miss this place immensely… Old friends and colleagues… great art and passionate community builders… yadda yadda. Sitting in 44 Stanley making a quick post. Here’s a great photoset of images from the [...]

happy new year

I’m exhausted. I know, I’ve been on holiday for the last couple of weeks (but that was visiting family, so it’s not really "restful"), and I mostly just took the last two months "off" to move to Dublin. But a new baby, moving continents, catalogue production, many shows, starting a PhD, quitting my three jobs [...]

Compressionist Dublin

e-Bayed myself another of my favorite scanners for performing images last week, built another battery pack, and hit Autumn in Donnybrook. Only caught the end of the season, but am so glad I did! It’s not only the leaf colors and interesting shades of damp that astonish me – the sky here, and how it’s [...]

I speak Dublish

We should have internet at home by Monday night it seems, and then communication will be back to normal (whatever "normal" means with my new life in Dublin – have not quite reached equilibrium yet. Hell, given the papers Nicole has to write and the various tidbits we need to do – plus all the [...]

greetings from Dublin

Dia dhuit (not that we know how that is pronounced)! Our introduction to Dublin was a day of uncharacteristic rain – in that it spit all day, not just for part of it. We think the isle was just trying to “help” us get acclimated. Sid was none too pleased. last days in South Africa [...]

new iTunes and iPods (updated below)

iTunes now sells movies (mostly widescreen, really nice selections), iPods now support up to 80GBs and 640×480 resolution. There are also new nanos, which support photos, and new shuffles that are just plain snazzy. dude. update: I didn’t realize, the new iTunes also allows you to download games (only for the new iPods, dammit), and, [...]

v/a (various art) (updated below)

Sorry for the lack of posting lately, everybody. As promised a few weeks ago, things are crazy with the big move, and finishing up all the things I need do here in Joburg. It looks like, however, I may have a couple of takers for my blog, which means Joburg coverage can carry on while [...]

retro-Compressionist update

There’s some newly updated Compressionist documentation on Compressionism.net. Latest additions to the video reflect, both, some of the performative aspects of the series, and the current hand-made editions; the latter are being created with the help of printmaker Jillian Ross at  David Krut Workshop in Johannesburg.  For those who have not been to the site [...]

galleries abound

Hit up Diane Victor’s great opening of 2-D works at Goodman (a little monochromatic, but it is Diane – and the fleshly and performative smoke drawings are my fave), Angus Taylor’s sculpture exhibition at U of J (the large-scale and abstract concrete works are the best), and an amusing and (as always) quality (and surprisingly [...]

Victor ious

diane victor @ fried contemporary Made it to the Roles/Robes opening at Fried in P-town a few nights ago, and it was a strong show – I can’t believe that place has been around for an entire year now, and it is really going strong (huge turn out, for a starving audience of Cont-Art lovers [...]

V/A (various art)

Been doing filler (mostly my own stuff) for the past while on the blog, whilst on residence in Brazil, and not getting out much since going gaga over my daughter. Hit the gallery strip two days ago, tho, and as usual was pleased by the works at Warren Siebrits – with the exception of the [...]

the storytellers @ the johannesburg art museum

the storytellers: works from the non-aggressive narrative So, more than a year and a half after the fact (and thanks to Sean Slemon, who insisted on lo-res versions of all my prints before deciding on a trade for his sculpture), I finally uploaded a photoset of my first major solo show to flickr. Check out [...]
