Congratulations to Gordon Froud for a monumental work

The Mobile-with-no-name-yet is installed and the scaffolding of sixteen metres taken down. One can now see the total immensity of the task. But no photograph can do justice.. The officials in the Department of Science and Technology are all speculating whether this work hides little webcams to observe stray and lazy workers lurking in ‘corporate [...]

A job well done

Gordon Froud has just completed installation on his ‘mobile’ in the new Department of Science and Technology building in Pretoria. The mobile (it still needs to be named) comprises the product of technology in general, objects ranging from kitchen utensils to scientific tools used in experimentation. Gordon Froud’s first day of installing his mega-mobile at the Department of Science and Technology did not pass without major hiccups.  Both the suppliers of scaffolding and the engineers were late with delivery, which cost the artist a bunch in money and time. He started off in the fifties as being a documentary photographer but his work was soon appropriated by the fine art community as ’Äòmore than [...]

Richard Smith at Con Hill

Pardon me for gushing, but Richard Smith’Äôs exhibition that opened at Constitution Hill Wednesday night, was a highlight for me. Andre Naude and I both walked away with the same word: inspiring, to say the least! Spanning over three of the rooms in the prison, the historical loadedness of the space also complemented the show’Äôs [...]

More (than) Histories: Guy du Toit, Fried Gallery

People who have not yet heard about it, we are rejoicing here in Pretoria (Tshwane) because of a new SERIOUS gallery that opened its doors in Brooklyn recently. This promises to be a hub for cutting-edge contemporary art in our area, and we also like the look and feel of the place. Very classy and [...]
