Great tips. I think that describing the topic and why you chose it should be there too.

Thanks, this was a nice concise article on the basics of writing an artist statement. I refer back to it whenever I write a statement for my latest series, to help keep me focused. It's pretty easy to go off on weird tangents when you are talking about your art.
Thanks again!

I was delighted to discover this wonderful article. It's excellent. In fact, have recommended it to our readers on The Artrepreneur Coach blog in an article with tips on writing an artist's statement http://reneephillips.blogspot.com/2009/05/your-artists-statement-solution.html

Nicole Ridgway pointed me to two more very useful links on this topic. My own take is a little different, but the following approaches, if followed directly, will get you to a very good statement as well:
At Columbia College
At the Artists Foundation

Decent tips, generally, particularly the bit about the concept one thinks about while making the art not necessarily being what the art is about. I'd add that description of the work (#6) should not be so detailed or precise as to dampen or take away from the reader/viewer the experience of seeing the art.
