Thanks for the report, Nathaniel, it was really interesting to read.
I lived in Namibia for almost two years 1997-98, first in Luderitz, later on in Swakopmund. While I was staying there I once received a mail from a guy at the Ivory Coast wondering if we were the only two Max-users in Africa. Although I didn’t see anyone else active on the Max list or elsewhere back then I though that at least there had to be something going on one or more places in SA.
Hey thanks for the note! Not sure if there were many back then (I only started using it in the past two years myself), but I, and a friend of mine – Ralph Borland – are now teaching Max here (@ Wits and UCT), so there will be plenty more of us soon. There are a few South African ex-pats I know of in the states and Italy, as well…. This year was the first time we spent a whole term teaching it, and it went down so much better than text-based code. Am hoping we’ll have users groups soon. Let me know if you are ever on our side of the world again.
