marina abramovic is my new secret girlfriend

Don’t get me wrong; Paolo Canevari is cool – and certainly his work is tight – but MA does a whole lot more for me. For those of you who don’t know, this dynamic duo is opening a show of installation, performance, and video over at the Johannesburg Art Gallery, this Sunday at 6pm (opened [...]

artthrobs back!!!!

Altho Mr Lamprecht is a clever chap, and fun to drink with, he’s admitted that artthrob was a bit too much for him, and will be handing over the editorship to someone else. The real treat, of course, is that founding editor Sue Williamson will be taking over during the transitional period… Sue! Make your [...]

commons sense

Well, the commons sense conference, by creative commons SA, is coming up (25-27 May), so Christo and I had a great meeting with Heather and Sylvia today, to discuss possible connections, presenters, artworks, blogs, etc. For those of you unaware, Creative Commons is a great new way of dealing with digital copyright, and share licenses…. [...]

thank you johannesburg

me, with gush’s work / abrie’s “degree” @ outlet, this is a really cheeky show. Entitled thank you johannesburg, it features artist/curator/gallerist abrie fourie’s certificate of completion on a curatorial course at the Johannesburg Biennale. That’s it. Simon Gush framed and hung the certificate, dead center, at Fourie’s small gallery. It’s a one-liner, but at [...]

terry kurgan @ goodman

some of terry’s work at the goodman gallery Kurgan’s Photographs 1924 – 2005 at the goodman gallery, features the work she is mostly known for: images of awkward, young adults/children, that border on the sexual. She juxtaposes these images, which look almost like banal prom photos, with some of her own family portraits, predating her [...]

watercolours and works on paper @ warren siebrits

kentridge’s UNTITLED watercolor concertina, circa 1991 First, I gotta say that the siebrits site is just about finished, and it’s already looking pretty classy… I like it when SA arts go live for the rest of the world to find! Woot. Second, as usual, Warren et al have put together a fine exhibition of some [...]

crazy days

Sorry for the virtual silence, everyone – been a bit hektik with the upcoming show (hope to see you on Friday at Franchise!). Other goings-on this week and after: There’s a screening of Joyti Mistry’s film at Wits tonight, 6pm (head of television) Great show, according to the amiable Zingi Mkefa, at Gallery Momo Muti [...]

compressionism and experiment02

A couple of days ago, I posted the invite to experiment02, my second duo show – and third, large-scale collaboration – with marcus neustetter. My half of the show, the beginning of a new body of work, has now been added to this site, as well as launched its own! For more information on Compressionism, [...]

TIGER! Apple – Mac OS X

Tiger release date announced as 29 April – the hot new OS for Apple Macs. Check out the features! Even if you don’t have a G5 (which would be nicer, since Tiger will utilize its architecture for super fast speeds, especially in relation to interactive video), this OS looks well worth it! Check it: Apple [...]

dinkies sithole @ franchise

dinkies sithole @ franchise Interesting cat, this guy. Sculpture, performance artist, painter. This show is all wall hangings, with feelings that remind me a bit of Basquiat. Worth seeing….

hans bernhard at wits

ill

Have some pix and comments from a few shows, including an MA at Wits, and Dinkies Sithole at Franchise, but have been feeling a bit sick lately, so might only get to them this weekend. Apparently, there is a nasty stomach flu (have managed to avoid) and hard-to-kick head cold (that’s me) floating around Joburg [...]

theme bug fixes and better integration

Per some requests and tips, my two themes for wordpress are now better than ever! The weird interface in admin is gone in all browsers and compatible with all FTP apps, and I’ve also separated out the files so as to be compatible with any add-ons or plug-ins, such as wp-email or the theme switcher. [...]

hot new spot in melville

That’s right, a new night-spot for all you cool peops out there. “Berlin” has a very, well, Berlin vibe, with a touch of LES, NYC (Lower East Side, New York City) and more than a hint of the JHB (Johannesburg, baby!). Unofficially opened about 2 weeks ago, the place is run by former Boere Bar [...]

funky functional

A new show opened at gordart Wednesday night, and I don’t what it’s called, but it’s something like “funky functional”. Tables, shirts, jewelry, plates, desks, lamps, etc, made by fashion designers and artists alike. My favorite are these pool ball rings by Louis Minnaar – totally hot, and very affordable (R154 each). I bought three.
