Usha Seejarim and Tracey Rose

First, good choice for art pick of the week over at the mail and guardian – SABC’s making waves (aka highlights from our collection, if you will) show is a testament to patronage that’s been going on for a bit longer than the Kebbles (tho not as extravagant – let’s see if their beat changes, and they try to have more of an impact in the years to come….).

Usha Seejarim at gallery momo

And here’s some of Usha Seejarim’s work (art pick from 2 weeks ago) at gallery momo – a beautiful exhibition of digital collage, video and installations/objects exploring home; it’s rightfully titled in place. I couldn’t get my camera to focus on the label, and can’t remember the name of this one, but hey, at least I’m not a paid journalist that is going to lose my job, right?

This is indeed what it seems – a bicycle made of mosquito netting. Her imagery includes normally banal objects related to domesticity, the outdoors, and the city – but they take on new shape and form (especially her metal constructed shower and water wall-piece, near the entrance) in the gallery. A recommended show.

And while you are in the hood, check out the Tracey Rose exhibition at the goodman gallery (art pick from last week). Pictured: ’ÄòLucie’Äôs Fur Version 1:1:1 ’Äì L’Äôannunciazione (After Fra Angelico)’Äô c.1434 ’Äì 2003. It’s a provocative show of some wonderfully interesting and clever photography (can’t decide how much is done in p-shop, and I like it that way!). Some of her more famous videos are also on display (not doin’ it for me – I think her imagery works better as stills, when leaving more to the imagination), and I should mention, for collectors, that there are lots of red stickers everywhere…. I know that she’s a hot name and all, and it’s kind of nice to go out and see why, without disappointment.

A new show opened at Warren Siebrits last night, and don’t forget that the final negotiate opens at the JAG tomorrow. Watch this space for more!
