Comment by Lebogang Maphunye — 23 July 2007 @ 3:37 pm
I admire Lebo Mashile as well as her ability to write interesting poems, more than that, to be able to peform them so impeccably. I bought her book ‘In a Ribbon of Rythm’ and think that it has GREAT potential. I respect Don Mattera who was the editor and I think he’s a wonderful poet, no, amazing poet. I have myself edited a lot of poems by young black writers and have seen good poetry and bad poetry. What I want to say is that Mashile’s book looks and reads like a second last draft (almost there but not quite). What also bothered me was the rehashing of ideas using different words. The first seven poems are really nice but as you go along you notice some repetition. The poems “Havana” and “Latitude” should never have been published( I think). They are TOTALY meaningless. There are others which should have been worked on some more but more than that: It’s cool.

A Soul-sister who’s inspired alot of African-Sisters in almost every personal aspect. You’ve opened my mind from narrow to broader hieghts. I love a particular piece “I Like it Deep Sometimes”. You’ve made me realise that there is more than one way to go around something, besides being judgemental. Keep insipiring us and giving us hope to make the right decisions about being an African woman and more. You’ve made me realise that there’s more to me than being a black woman, now I’m a black proud woman. Thank u Sister.Lots of love…God Bless you.

I have read your anthology and watched almost all of the lattitude programmes ne,i felt the poetry was well written, but some of your views and comments were a bit prejudice and one sided representations of greater stories. I love your vibe to bits though! One Love!
