cronje for art
PS I am admittedly biased, as Franci Cronje is my buddy, but I do indeed believe she may win… :)

stuttering is now set up at The Brett Kebble Art Awards and is in the process of being judged. If in Cape Town, it officially opens on Wednsday (we find out the results at a fancy shmancy dinner on Tuesday) and it then remains for 10 days. There is some great work, and it is Mos Def worth checking out. My picks: Franci Cronje’s power paradox, Norman Katherine (sp?), and Angie Buckland… More when I return to Joburg.
Goodbye Cruel Flat.
Well, it’s time y’all. Nicole and I are in the process of packing up our stuff; the new apartment (just around the corner, still in Johannesburg) is nearly ready, and the current home is looking like a mess as we plop our belongings into boxes, in between checking email and backing up hard drives. Additionally, I’m on my way to Cape Town this week, in order to set up stuttering at The Brett Kebble Art Awards’ Finalist Exhibition. Wish me luck! All that being said, I’ll likely have time for one more post before I hit the road. If not, I’ll see you when I see you (back on October 1st).
Just a got a new Googlewhack. Question: What does South Africa not need any more of? Answer: aphoristical antiretroviral(s)
Clark says he probably would have voted for war - talk about a gross misrepresentation by the press. And now it’s a bit late to take it back; the ‘move from Dean to Clark’ ball is rolling, when perhaps it shouldn’t be…
And from The Note:
Writes one Democrat with national political experience:
‘I have read the accounts of the Clark interviews and my reaction is despair and anger. Why did my party’s best operatives think it would be a good idea to subject their neophyte candidate to the country’s savviest reporters for over an hour? Why have my party’s elders rallied around a candidate who is so shockingly uninformed about core issues and his own positions? I am not a Dean supporter [as opposed to me], but I am angry that our party’s leaders have anointed an alternative to him who seems even more ignorant and unprepared, and that this supposed ‘anti-war’ candidate turns out to have been in favor of both the war resolution and Richard Nixon!! And let’s not even talk about the Clintons. Today I am embarrassed to be a Democrat.’
See this
response to the thingist
post yesterday,
on the Rhizome.org site; I edited
down the public response from Rachel
Greene about their situation, for those interested that don’t have membership
to their site. The email, which appeared on the rhizome raw list-serv last night
(NYC time) is entitled, "Rhizome
Update".
Dear Rhizomers — There have been some comments about Rhizome.org’s
status on Raw and Thingist
so we wanted to respond and issue an update.
Rachel Greene… is succeeding Mark Tribe as Executive Director… Mark has recently
started a new position as Director of Art & Technology at the Columbia University
School of the Arts. He will continue to be active and take a leadership role on
the Rhizome Board of Directors.
Over the last few years, [ Rhizome
has ] worked with the New
Museum of Contemporary Art… and always found them to be a wonderful partner.
The New Museum is committed
to showing a culturally and geographically diverse range of artists….
The New Museum [ will
now ] provide Rhizome with office
space and other forms of administrative support. Rhizome
[ will ] continue to operate as an independent organizational entity, retain current
staff and programs… web site [ will ] remain at http://rhizome.org.
[ Their ] mission and core principles [ will ] not change, but [ they ] hope to
collaborate with the New Museum
on a range of programs, including exhibitions, commissions and events.
This possible partnership with the New
Museum represents an opportunity to create a stable environment for Rhizome
to support the global new media art community while remaining true to its commitment
to inclusiveness and grassroots structures. Given how inhospitable the current
economic climate is for small nonprofits, [ they ] feel this would be the best
way to ensure [ their ] ability to fulfill [ their ] mission….
Sincerely,
Rachel
Greene

Oooh. But then I found this. It’s a letter from Michael Moore, urging Clark to run, before he announced his candidacy (about a week ago). If you don’t know Mr. Moore, read this post, or his book Stupid White Men, or if you are not a big reader, see one of his movies, Bowling for Columbine or Roger and Me.
Finally, someone makes some kind of statement about the DMCA. I know I’ve been leaning towards Clark, but I have no problems teatering back over to the Dean side of the fence. Wired to Wired: Dean and Lessig
From THE THING (sad day for digital art, or happy day for non-paying art-lovers online?):
Sources indicate that the ‘zome (rhizome.org)
officially dissolved its Board of Directors on Tuesday, the 16th of September.
An entity with many of its functions will be reconstituted at the New Museum, where
Mark Tribe & some other principals will join the NuMu’s board &/or become
trustees.
Rachel Greene is slated to direct this new organization.
It’s not been spelled out but is surmised that this entity will assume full responsibility for the maintenance of
Rhizome’s Art Base archive.
